The Willett vs Walker Charity Golf Day is the highlight of the Rotherham fundraising calendar. It brings together two of Sheffield’s best-known faces — Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion and Rotherham member since 2005, and Dan Walker, the broadcaster and BBC presenter — for a day of competitive golf in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity, Sheffield.
The format
Teams of four compete in a charity stableford format around the full eighteen-hole James Braid course. Danny and Dan play each round, joining each team for a hole or two. The day includes auction items donated by Tour players and Yorkshire businesses, on-course competitions, and a charity dinner in the Thrybergh Hall dining rooms.
The cause
All proceeds go to The Children’s Hospital Charity, Sheffield — the cause closest to both Danny and Dan’s hearts as Sheffield natives. The day has raised substantial sums year on year since inception.
How to get involved
Team entries, sponsor packages, and auction-item donations are coordinated through the club office. To register interest for the next Willett vs Walker, contact gm@rotherhamgolfclub.com or call the office on 01709 850 466.
The Willett connection
Danny’s connection to Rotherham predates the Green Jacket by eleven years. He joined as a teenager in 2005, won the club championship within two years, then the Yorkshire Amateur, then the English Amateur. He was made a Life Member after the Masters win and held the 2016 homecoming press conference at the club wearing the Green Jacket. He returns regularly between Tour commitments. The Walker Cup bag he carried at Royal County Down in 2007 is on display in the clubhouse.
